Furniture recycling scheme diverts over 68 tonnes away from landfill
Fly-tipping is a major issue in Salford, blighting our communities and draining resources, with much of the waste dumped being furniture including, beds, sofas and washing machines.
While the responsibility for the removal of illegally dumped waste sits with Salford Council, we’re committed to ensuring our communities remain safe, clean and green places to live, and we operate a number of successful initiatives to help clean-up our neighbourhoods.
Our Furniture Recycling Project is one such scheme, which during 2019/20 saw 68.5 tonnes of furniture and household items recycled and donated to families in need.
Furnishing a home from scratch can be very expensive and some of our tenants aren’t in the position to buy everything new, but thanks to this scheme, people who are struggling can come down to our warehouse and pick what they need to help make their house into a home.
Much of the furniture has been donated or left behind in vacant properties, and without this initiative may have ended up dumped in our communities or sent to landfill sites.
