Derelict women’s refuge transformed into social housing in Salford
Salix Homes is committed to creating more social housing in Salford to help tackle the housing crisis and deliver modern, safe and affordable housing for people who need it most.
In the past year, we have built, acquired or have in development 362 new homes in Salford. We also launched our fantastic Joan Lestor House development.
The facility in Walkden is a former women’s hostel that had stood empty for five years becoming a target for anti-social behaviour and vandalism.
In 2019 we carried out an £800,000 refurbishment and remodelling scheme, transforming the derelict site into nine contemporary, one and two-bedroom apartments for social housing rent.
With 6,000 people on the housing register in Salford alone, not only has our Joan Lestor House development provided a roof over the head of those that need it most, but we’ve also given a new lease of life to this once-abandoned building which had become a real blight in the community.
The project was even featured on BBC documentary series The Empty Housing Scandal, presented by journalist Matt Allwright, which shone a spotlight on initiatives to bring empty buildings back into use as housing.

Building new futures on Poets
At Salix Homes, we believe that everyone deserves a place to call home, which is why we’re passionate about creating new homes across Salford.
The Poets in Swinton is our first ever new-build housing development, which once complete, will see 160 brand new homes built for local people.
A mix of two, three and four-bedroom homes are being built on the estate, also known as Beechfarm, replacing 146 properties that have been demolished due to historical structural issues.
Community has always been at the heart of Poets and we’ve worked closely with residents from the very start to help retain that sense of community spirit and preserve those neighbourly bonds.
The development is well underway, with some families now moved in and settled into their new homes, of which 120 are social housing and the remainder are for sale or shared ownership.
As our first new-build project, we’re incredibly proud to see our aspirations for more affordable homes in Salford brought to life, particularly at a time when housing is in such short supply, and we look forward to welcoming even more families into their homes as the development nears completion.
