Focus on... Kickstarting a career

Finding the first rung of the career ladder is a daunting prospect for many young people, particularly without any prior work experience.

At Salix Homes, we’re committed to providing opportunities for young people in Salford, and this year alone we’ve supported 20 customers into work, which includes 23-year-old Michael Richardson.

Michael spent six months working with Willo Homes – our affordable home-ownership brand – as part of the Government’s Kickstart programme. The scheme is designed to create high quality, paid work placements for unemployed, young people claiming Universal Credit and at risk of long-term unemployment.

With no prior experience of the property sector, Michael was tasked with arranging property viewings, completing sign-ups for new residents, and crucially, learning new skills that’s enabled him to build up his CV and gain valuable experience.

For Michael, it’s provided the first step on the career ladder and since completing the work placement, we’re incredibly proud that he’s been able to secure a full-time role as a property manager with estate agency Thornley Groves.

Focus on... Building a brighter future

We run a successful apprenticeship, work experience and training programme to help people learn new skills and build themselves a brighter future.

For people like 19-year-old Max Healey, it’s been life-changing.

Max is now excelling on a Groundwork apprenticeship, but we first supported him back in 2016, when he was just 13-years-old.

Max took part in a project we were running with his school to refurbish a community room at one of our tower blocks. It was this work experience at a young age that first inspired him to set his sights on a career in construction.

Over the years, we’ve continued to support Max along with our partners, helping him to secure a place on a local construction traineeship and achieve a range of qualifications and new skills.

After a couple of unsuccessful apprenticeship applications, Max was determined not to give up on his dream of working in construction, so we supported him to apply for a Groundwork Apprenticeship with Chandos – one of our partner contractors.

Max was thrilled to start the apprenticeship last year and is thriving in his new role. Max’s story just goes to prove what can be achieved when you put your mind to something and have the right support around you.
